Nicholas Julian

Board Treasurer

Nicholas Julian is an experienced leader with more than 20 years in military service, nonprofit leadership, and government agency management. As Director of Social Services for the Midlands Area Command of the Salvation Army, he provides strategic oversight of programs that support vulnerable individuals and families across North and South Carolina. 

Nicholas holds degrees in Psychology, Counseling, and Business Administration, and is a Board-Certified Mental Health and Crisis Coach. His leadership style is both strategic and people-centered, grounded in trauma-informed principles. 

Throughout his career, Nicholas has led several impactful initiatives, including the launch of South Carolina’s first nationally recognized Respite Caregiver Training Program, creation of a prison farm On-the-Job Training (OJT) program, development of a county-wide mobile food pantry, and coordination of large-scale homeless meal programs and transitional sheltering efforts. 

He is also a passionate advocate for social services, having served as a state leader and lobbyist for veterans’ issues, and continues to contribute through service on numerous boards, committees, and coalitions at local, state, and national levels. 

Sarah Bechtold

Board Secretary

Sarah Bechtold serves as the Community Development Coordinator for the City of Rock Hill, where she works through the Housing Development Corporation to improve housing access for low to moderate income residents. Her work includes overseeing Rapid Re-Housing and Homelessness Prevention programming to help individuals and families maintain stable housing. 

Sarah earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Social Work from Winthrop University. Her passion for macro-level social work and community development began in 2020 during her internship with the City of Rock Hill. Since then, she has grown into her current leadership role through a progression from intern to grant-funded staff to full-time team member. 

She remains deeply committed to addressing homelessness and expanding community-based solutions for housing stability. 

Shawn Caraballo, CDE

Board Vice Chair

Shawn Caraballo is a nonprofit executive with 16 years of experience in the social services sector. As Vice President of the Midlands Area Consortium for the Homeless (MACH) and a member of the South Carolina Interagency Council on Homelessness Board of Directors, she champions initiatives that strengthen support for vulnerable youth and families throughout South Carolina.

Throughout her career, Caraballo has demonstrated exceptional leadership in program expansion, organizational excellence, and strategic partnership development. Her expertise in balancing mission-driven initiatives with sound business practices has resulted in significant improvements in service delivery for underserved populations. With a Master's in Higher Education Administration, Caraballo continues to advocate for systemic change and create lasting impact in the Midlands community.

Krystle Gay-Holmes, LMSW

Board Chair

 

Krystle Gay-Holmes is a passionate advocate for social justice and community empowerment with extensive experience in social work, outreach, and nonprofit leadership. She earned her Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of South Carolina and obtained her LMSW shortly thereafter.

 

As Board Chair of the Midlands Area Consortium for the Homeless (MACH), Krystle leads collaborative efforts to address homelessness and promote sustainable housing solutions across a 13-county region. Her leadership is grounded in equity, inclusion, and a commitment to systemic change.

 

Krystle also serves on the board of the Harriet Hancock Center, a nonprofit dedicated to providing advocacy, resources, and support for the LGBTQ+ community in South Carolina. Through this role, she helps advance education, outreach, and inclusivity throughout the state.

 

A proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Krystle is known for organizing impactful community events and fostering partnerships that uplift underserved and marginalized populations. Her leadership reflects a deep commitment to creating lasting, meaningful change.
